Does teeth whitening work on crowns and veneers?

Dentist talking with a patient in a bright dental surgery

No. Teeth whitening does not lighten crowns, veneers or fillings, because whitening gel only lightens natural tooth enamel. It can lift surface stains that have built up on dental work, but it cannot make it whiter than its original colour, while the natural teeth around it may lighten.

That difference matters if you have visible dental work at the front of your mouth. This guide explains what whitening can and cannot do for crowns, veneers, fillings and other dental work, and what to ask your dentist before you start.

Why doesn't teeth whitening work on crowns and veneers?

Whitening works on natural teeth. The NHS says teeth whitening can only lighten the colour of natural teeth, so crowns, dentures and implants will not change colour. Veneers and fillings will not go whiter than their original colour either.

Which dental work does teeth whitening change?

Only natural teeth change colour. Dental work keeps its original shade, though surface stains on crowns, veneers and caps can lift.

Type What whitening does
Natural teeth Lighten in colour
Porcelain veneers Surface stains can lift; the veneer will not go whiter than its original shade
Crowns and caps Surface stains can lift; the crown will not go whiter than its original shade
Tooth-coloured (white) fillings and bonding Will not change colour, while the natural teeth around them may lighten
Amalgam (silver) fillings Consult a dentist before using SmilePro whitening products
Dentures and implants Will not change colour

Can whitening remove stains from crowns and veneers?

It can help with surface stains. SmilePro products can lift stains from coffee, tea, red wine and smoking that have built up on crowns, veneers and caps over time, but they cannot make dental work whiter than the colour it was made.

What happens if you whiten teeth next to a crown or veneer?

Your natural teeth may lighten while the crown or veneer stays the same shade, so they may no longer match. If that happens, your dentist can talk you through the options for matching them. Speak to your dentist first if you have visible dental work at the front.

What if your crowns or veneers are on your back teeth?

Then a colour difference is unlikely to show. If your dental work is on back teeth that are not visible when you smile, whitening your natural front teeth can still make sense. If you are not sure which teeth show, or what dental work you have, ask your dentist before you start.

Should you whiten before getting crowns or veneers?

Ask your dentist. If you are planning new crowns, veneers or white fillings at the front of your mouth, your dentist can tell you whether to whiten first, so the new work can be matched to the shade you want. Dental work cannot be whitened afterwards.

Can I use SmilePro if I have crowns, veneers or fillings?

Yes, with care. SmilePro products are safe to use on veneers, caps and crowns, and can lift surface stains that have built up on them, but they will not change the colour of the dental work itself. If you have amalgam (silver) fillings, consult a dentist before using SmilePro whitening products.

Does teeth whitening work on dentures, implants or bonding?

No. Whitening only lightens the colour of natural teeth, so dentures, implant crowns and composite bonding will not change colour. Surface stains on them are best handled by your dentist or with the cleaning routine your dentist recommends.

Can you whiten your teeth with braces?

We do not recommend whitening while you have braces, as the result can be uneven. Wait until your braces are off.

Who should not whiten their teeth?

SmilePro whitening products are not for anyone under 18, or anyone pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not use them if you have gum disease, an oral infection or recent dental surgery, or amalgam fillings without consulting a dentist first. If you have sensitive teeth or unhealthy gums, see a dentist first.
